Architecture for the Blue Ridge Mountains

Custom modern homes in the High Country of North Carolina.

DESIGN ROOTED IN PLACE, PRECISION & PARTNERSHIP

South Fork Architecture is an architecture-led residential firm based in Boone, North Carolina, serving the High Country and Western North Carolina. We provide integrated architectural design and construction services for modern custom homes.

At South Fork, the land is the first layer of design. Every home responds directly to its site including slope, soil conditions, drainage, light, access, and views. Appalachian topography and mountain climate are not constraints to work around, but conditions that shape the architecture from the beginning.

We understand the nuances of building in the mountains and listen closely to how our clients want to live, work, and gather. Our work balances contemporary design with long-term durability and construction clarity.

By leading both design and construction under one roof, we maintain continuity from concept through completion and reduce the disconnect that often occurs between drawings and built work.

The result? A home designed to meet your needs, respect the land, and last for generations.

Experience Grounded in the High Country

South Fork Architecture is led by architect Jeff Mance, whose experience spans more than 25 years and over 50 completed residential projects, including work on complex mountain sites.

We have reinterpreted the vernacular architecture of Western North Carolina through a contemporary lens. Rather than replicating tradition, we draw from how regional buildings respond to slope, climate, material availability, and scale. Those principles guide mountain architecture that is grounded in place rather than imposed on it.

Technical decisions are addressed early. Foundation systems, drainage strategy, access, structural design, and long-term durability are considered alongside spatial experience and daily use. Architecture is not separated from construction realities.

Each home is designed with careful attention to how it will be built, how it will weather, and how it will function over time in a mountain environment.

  • "We chose a property on a mountain peak - beautiful, but challenging to build on. South Fork made the process clear and calm from the start. They guided us through every step, and designed a home that is unique, practical, and ours".

    —Homeowner, Todd, NC

  • "We weren't sure where to start in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. South Fork gave us clarity and confidence from day one. They listed to what mattered most, respected the land, and are building a home that is thoughtful and stronger.

    —Homeowner, Blowing Rock, NC

AN Architecture-led Approach

  • Every project begins with a careful evaluation of the site. In the High Country, slope, soil conditions, drainage, access, and climate influence architecture from the start. Early feasibility reduces risk and clarifies scope before design advances.

  • Architecture develops in response to land and client priorities. Spatial experience, structural systems, and material performance are considered together so the design is both intentional and buildable.

  • Construction is led by the same team responsible for design. Decisions remain aligned, and architectural intent is carried through completion without disconnect between drawings and built work.

  • The finished home is designed to belong to you and to its setting. Proportion, material, and placement are shaped by the landscape so the architecture feels grounded in the Blue Ridge Mountains and durable over time.
